Football Session Plan Template: What Every Section Should Actually Do

A football session plan can be useful. It can also become paperwork that the coach fills in once and never looks at again. The difference is whether the plan helps you make decisions. A good template shouldn't ask for information because coaching courses traditionally put it in a box. Every section should help you prepare, coach, adapt, or review.

1. Session objective

Write one main football outcome. Avoid broad labels such as "passing" or "defending." Try: "Improve support angles so the player on the ball has more than one useful option." or: "Improve the team's reaction after losing possession, especially protecting central space." Now the rest of the plan has something to organise around.

2. Player and environment information

Record what affects the session: expected player numbers, age or stage, session length, available pitch space, goals and equipment, goalkeeper availability, known attendance issues. This isn't administration for its own sake. It stops you designing a perfect 7v7 practice when you've only got half a pitch and ten players.

3. Arrival activity

Plan what players do as soon as they arrive. This reduces wasted time and helps you deal with staggered arrivals. The activity should usually be easy to enter without a long explanation.

4. Main practice

Write the organisation simply enough that another coach could understand it. Include: numbers, area, directions, scoring method, restart, main football problem. If the explanation needs an entire page, the activity may be too complicated.

5. Coaching observations

This is more useful than writing a script of things you plan to shout.

  • player's body position before receiving

  • support angle after the pass

  • whether the first look is forward

  • reaction when possession is lost

6. Progression and regression

Write one way to increase the challenge and one way to reduce it. Harder: reduce space or add another defender. Easier: increase space or create an overload. This section becomes extremely valuable when the session looks completely different from what you imagined.

7. Game application

Plan how the session objective can appear in the final game. You may not need a special rule. Sometimes the right area shape, team numbers, or scoring direction is enough. If you do add a condition, make sure it rewards the learning rather than distorting the game.

8. Matchday connection

Write one sentence explaining how this session relates to the match. "Last match we struggled to support the player receiving wide." "Next match we're looking for quicker reactions when possession changes." This keeps the weekly process connected.

9. Review

After training, record what actually happened. What worked? What didn't? Who found the task too easy or too difficult? What should carry into the next session? What did you change? A session plan becomes far more valuable when it captures learning from the coach as well as the players.

Keep the plan short enough to use

A six-page session plan may satisfy a course assessment. It probably won't help a volunteer coach standing beside the pitch in the rain. The best template is detailed enough to guide you and simple enough to glance at. If you're spending longer formatting the plan than thinking about the players, something has gone wrong.

Final thought

A session plan isn't proof that coaching happened. It's a decision-making tool. Use it to clarify the objective, anticipate the environment, prepare adaptations, and connect one session to the next. Then change it when the players tell you the plan needs changing.
